Common questions

Ask the experts

01 What’s the difference between a Utility Conversion and a standard vehicle modification?

A Utility Conversion changes what a vehicle is classified as and what it can do commercially, not just what it looks like. Bulkhead integration, load space engineering and GVM upgrades change the vehicle’s payload rating, regulatory classification and commercial operator appeal at a fundamental level. That requires engineering validation and type approval, not just fabrication. Every conversion we deliver is certified to OEM compliance standards and road-legal from the point of delivery.

02 What vehicle types do you work with?

Our recent programmes span PVs and CVs, with particular experience in bulkhead and load space creation for car-derived vehicles, transforming their status into full commercial vehicles. The right starting platform depends on your end-market requirement and commercial objective and we can advise you early on if a platform isn’t suited to the conversion you need.

03 Can you work to our existing design specifications?

Yes. We work with OEMs who come to us with a fully developed brief, a concept, or an ambition and a target market. We can integrate with your existing design team and programme structure, or we can lead the programme from initial concept through to a deliverable vehicle. Your requirements determine the scope of our involvement.

04 What volumes can you support?

Our programmes are built for low-to-medium volume, from 300 to 5,000 units per year. At that scale, our specialist programme management delivers more than a standard production line can.

We work across everything from short, limited edition runs through to more sustained programme delivery, from our two UK manufacturing facilities in Dagenham and Pontypool.

05 Are you qualified or certified?

With over a decade of experience, we certainly are. Our credentials include:

  • EDC Automotive holds CoP through the VCA
  • European Whole Vehicle Type Approval
  • ISO 9001 Quality Management Certification
  • ISO14001 Environmental Management System

We also hold Ford Pro Convertor status and Stellantis LCV Approval, Mercedes Strategic Partner and VW Approved Converter accreditation.

It means that every vehicle we deliver meets the compliance and quality standards expected of the manufacturer, not just the converter.

06 Do you homologate the vehicles?

Yes. We offer a complete end-to-end programme delivery, not an additional service you need to manage elsewhere.

We hold European Whole Vehicle Type Approval and VCA Conformity of Production, which means we manage the full compliance and certification process and deliver a vehicle that is road-legal and market-ready.
